We’ve already covered Weebly and how powerful it can be as a hosting provider (here), with it’s built in website builder functionality. We additionally covered the limitations it has, including the fact that once you choose Weebly your stuck with it, and cannot transfer it to other platforms like WordPress. This may prove to be frustrating for certain businesses and users who outgrow the Weebly capabilities or simply want something different. However, before you think your too good for Weebly, understand that they are constantly expanding on what Weebly can offer its users. Adding functionality and design capabilities that are characteristic of well designed WordPress sites, but are much easier to put together. Web designers don’t want Weebly to be this easy, but the fact of the matter is Weebly is making high-end design achievable for beginners.
Over the past year they have been working on what they are calling Carbon. Which makes adding galleries, slideshows and videos seamless into your Weebly site, check out some of these functionalities put into action here. You will notice that not all the pages are characteristic of Weebly’s traditional two sided pages, but that some of the pages are divided into different sections and elements, and organized differently as you scroll down the site. This is something called page layouts that allows users to choose from over 30 different page layouts depending on the aesthetics and flow they are trying to create. The dividers that Weebly offers are also very handy as they can be used to create horizontal and vertical divisions between sections, allowing you to recreate certain page layouts by hand or simply design your own layout. Doing something like this would be tedious and could take hours to perfect on WordPress, where as weebly only takes seconds.
As of August 23rd 2016, Weebly has also launched something called sections. Which included a slew of new customization features.
- Custom Headers – Weebly’s headers have traditionally been a little cookie cutter. Not really a lot of customizing or styling was possible unless you knew CSS, which most Weebly users don’t, and is why they choose Weebly in the first place. However, things have changed and now you can customize your header size, and add elements, which is a big win for Weebly.
- Customizable Backgrounds – This is something that many Weebly users have wanted for ever, and now it’s finally here. Add custom colors, images and even videos to your websites background. Weebly even has a free library of images and videos to use on your website!
- Sections – The newest feature sections is available on a handful of Weebly themes and should be available on all the themes in the near future. It allows you to drag and drop multiple body sections at once, making the process of designing beautiful websites that much easier.
This is just the beginning for Weebly and you can bet the capabilities that businesses and bloggers will have on Weebly is going to grow exponentially. Another cool feature that I forgot to mention with all this is that their service is becoming more affordable, which means more users and more money to reinvest into making Weebly even better. Ten years ago it would have been inconceivable to think you can design websites of this caliber with a drag and drop like Weebly, and it will be just as shocking in the next ten years what will be possible with Weebly. For web designers this can be threatening, but for the general public who wants to set up a website as easy as they set up a facebook page, then this can be really empowering. The process of finding a good web developer these days is tough, so I support people having the ability to do it themselves.
Don’t forget: In addition to the different page layouts, and all the free themes, they have a large community of designers who build third party themes, just in case you don’t like what comes free with Weebly.
Additionally: Weebly can be used on most of the hosting providers discussed here on globat review.
